Thelight sensitive rods and cones float gently on a layer of tissue that provides nutrients and carries away the waste products from the chemical reactions involved in transforming light into the signals that are relayed to the brain. This tissue is also a vital barrier between the clear vitreous humour of the eye and the blood that flows around it.

In a condition known as Macular Degeneration, this barrier breaks down and fluids break through, clouding vision.
